Fundación AZTI – AZTI Fundazioa (Coordinator)AZTI (www.azti.es) is a non-profit foundation committed to the social and economic development of the marine environment and the food sector. With 34 years of experience, the organisation has developed more than 2.000 projects with industries and public institutions, including 30 European projects running at present. AZTI is part of Tecnalia Corporation. AZTI has three buildings in the north of Spain in Bizkaia (Sukarrieta and Derio) and Gipuzkoa (Pasaia). With a team of 234 professional, and a turnover in 2015 of 16.8M€, AZTI, as Research and Innovation Centre is structured in two business divisions: Marine Research and Food Research.
The Food Research Division is formed by 71 researchers and technicians, distributed in four main areas of technological specialization:
- New foods
- Food Quality, Safety and Identity
- Effective and Sustainable Processes
- Consumer and market
The works in this field are aimed at the improvement of the efficiency and sustainability of the food industry, reducing the impacts of the whole food production chain. AZTI-Tecnalia supports the food industry in its sustainable development by applying technologies and measures to improve its environmental performance and its economic and social development.
The Marine Research Division is formed by 121 researchers and technicians, distributed in the following four main areas of specialization:
- Marine Ecosystems Functioning
- Sustainable Fisheries Management
- Marine and Coastal Environmental Management
- Aquaculture and Marine Technologies
The works in this field are aimed at the providing of scientific knowledge on the functioning of ocean and coastal systems in order to attain a sustainable management of their goods and services. Regarding to aquaculture, it looks for alternatives to meet a growing demand for fish products and boosts its transformation and sustainability.
